I will try to be as objective as possible about tandem paragliding story. Despite all my efforts, I know that some people will see contradiction and others will agree on my description. That’s why you will find different stories about the beginning of this activity.

I want to thank all the people who helped me, through their friendship and their support, to leave this passion.

The story… this one begins with the flight of two Belgium guys on  a summer morning in 1983 (I don’t even know their names). They tried to start from Pertuiset as tandem with a "Foil 252", a harness and a rope. The start went wrong. After modifying their system of fixing (pilot/ passenger) they managed to fly for the first time in the afternoon from Pertuiset to the landing  strip of Mieussy (French Alpes).

22/06/2006 : I just found the name of the first pilot who flew tandem. It s not a Belgium guy but a  person called Jacques Excofier called “the Science” with his 8 year old daughter. His veil was made of 2 parachutes sewed on each other (more information can be found soon on a page dedicated to him)

                              I was member of the Choucas club. Our president was Mr.   Gérard Bosson. I started paragliding in spring 1983. I made the brevet de pilot n° 0031 (pilot License)  of the French parachuting federation.

     Ma first flying record was 51 minutes on 10/06/84 with a "Foil 252" (see newspaper article VSD July 84), beating Hugues Baud-Grasset on 11 minutes. Then 54 minutes on 02/08/84, to finally reach  2 h 40 minutes on 09/07/85. I flew under a veil used from jumping out of planes: "Foil 252" . this veil had 7 boxes, a surface of 21 m², and was 1,5 thin.

    Then I wanted everyone to discover these sensations : to children, tall or small people, elderly, everyone. The idea of tandem paragliding started to grow..

    In 1984  on the slope  of Brasses school  (French Haute Savoie)  uneven 70 meters, we made some tests : I was the pilot and  Jean-François Baudey my passenger.

    On the first flight, Jean-François Baudey was holding himself through on the pilot's harness, in order  to release in case the start went dangerous. After trying for a while, we found the right technique an improved it.

    Then we went for real flights, unevens of  1000 meters from Pertuiset to the village of Mieussy ( Haute-Savoie ). The veil was a FOIL 252. Flight after flight, starts (from a 50%) and landings could be improved. 

    Ce fut l'époque des précurseurs du vol à deux, moi même, Hugues Baud-Grasset, . Puis en 1985, Gérard Bosson, Jean Claude Bétemps, et suivirent  Georges Perret,  Simon Métral, Serge Tuaz, Jany Adam, Guy Sternak et bien d'autres...

    Ce fut aussi le temps des désaccords avec les représentants de la Fédération Française de Parachutisme. Ils voulaient interdire. Nous, nous voulions continuer et démontrer que cela pouvait se faire en toute sécurité.  Les journées où  les représentants de la FFP étaient là, la bonne ambiance n'était pas forcément au rendez vous. Mais que voulez-vous, chacun défendait son point de vue.

    Souvent avec Guy Sternak et Jany Adam, nous échangions nos idées, nos points de vue pour la fabrication d'une voile de parapente  tandem. Ils ont franchi le pas en construisant une aile spécialement conçue pour le parapente tandem et le vol tracté, d'une surface de 42 m², avec un bon taux de chute pour l'époque. C'était l'ADAK. Les décollages, et surtout les atterrissages  étaient considérablement facilités. J'ai dû faire avec cette voile un bon millier de vols. D'un gonflage facile, elle tenait magnifiquement bien dans les turbulences. Elle était "béton". C'est une des voiles avec laquelle je me suis fait vraiment plaisir en l'air.
